What to Wear for Timeless In-Home Newborn Photos

A Knoxville newborn + Maternity Photographer's GUide

I'm Kelsey.

Welcome mama!

Knoxville lifestyle newborn + maternity photographer, Jesus follower, wife, and girl-mom.

I create photographs as beautiful as your memories, preserving them in heirloom quality albums + wall art that you and your family will cherish for a lifetime.

Figuring out what to wear for your in-home Knoxville newborn session can be surprisingly overwhelming. Especially when you're adjusting to life with a newborn. Everything has changed pretty much overnight, including your body.

You may not know what feels flattering post-partum as your body shifts and heals. The idea of coordinating outfits for the whole family can feel like a lot while you're settling in to your new normal.

Mama, I get it. I've been there too.

That's why I created this guide to walk you through it step by step. We'll keep things simple while creating a timeless look for your whole family.

CHoose a cohesive color palette for your  Knoxville newborn photos

Consider what colors you have in your home already. Think about what will coordinate with the main rooms we shoot in (nursery, master bedroom, living room, and porch).

If you're interested in creating wall art with your newborn photos, think about where you'll put the photos and what colors would look good in that room.

When in doubt, choose neutrals. Neutrals like cream, white, brown, olive, navy, soft blue, and blush will photograph beautifully in any space. They also bring that timeless feel to your newborn photos.

Avoid overly bright colors and busy patterns.

Dress Yourself First

In-home newborn sessions are not just about the baby. They're about capturing your whole family as you welcome a new life to your little corner of the world. You are an integral piece of this. From carrying the baby to giving birth, no one has worked as hard for this little one as you have and I always try to focus a little extra on mom for that very reason.

Often, this is the first time you've gotten dressed up since giving birth and I know it can feel overwhelming. So let's prioritize you. Let's choose an outfit you feel good, beautiful, and comfortable in and build the rest of the outfits from there.

I love a dress for mom as it's flattering and comfortable on your healing body. On a deeper level, dresses also bring a touch of timeless femininity to your session. Choose something you love from your own closet or borrow something from mine.

You'll have access to my client closet of carefully curated dresses designed to flatter your ever-changing body through pregnancy and post-partum. Many of them are also nursing friendly if you're planning to breastfeed and want to be able to nurse your little one on or off camera during your in-home newborn session.

What should baby wear?

I love simple options for newborns. Look for something that shows those precious little fingers and toes. If you want to capture chunky arm and leg rolls, choose something that leaves them uncovered. Textures like knits and lace look so cute next to that soft newborn skin.

Some mamas choose a special outfit, a gown, a romper, or just a swaddle. Whatever you choose, be sure it fully covers their diaper.

How to style the rest of your family

Here's my golden rule: Coordinate, don't match. Look for things in the same color palette and fill with neutrals like creams, beiges, and browns. Add variety with different textures like cotton, knit, lace, ribbing, etc. Avoid logos and loud patterns.

Make sure everyone is dressed at the same level of casual or formal. It would look odd to have mom in a simple cotton dress and dad in a crisp button down and suit.

The same guidelines apply to siblings. I love little dresses for girls and rompers, polos, henleys, or overalls for boys.

Going barefoot takes away one more decision and adds a sense of comfort and familiarity to your photos.

Don't Stress, I'll help you plan

You don't actually have to figure this out alone. I include a planning consultation with every session. This is when we'll walk through your vision for your session and I'll help you style yourself and the whole family. You'll have access to my client closet, and I'll send you links to anything you might need to purchase to complete your family's look.

Whenever possible, I like to schedule these before your baby even arrives. That way it's one less thing to worry about when you're taking care of your newborn and if anything needs to be ordered online, we've allotted plenty of time for shipping.

Keep it simple

The focus of your Knoxville newborn photos is your baby and your family. At the end of the day, it's not about your outfits.

Don't overthink it. Dress yourself first, build from there, and choose neutrals when in doubt. Your photos are going to be beautiful.
