Black and white family portrait with newborn baby during an in-home session in Powell TN

In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session | Powell, TN | Magnolia Clower

I first photographed the Clower family when their son Sullivan was a newborn in 2024. Getting to return to their beautiful historic Powell home for a second in-home newborn photography session was so special. Their newest baby, Magnolia, is already so loved.

Magnolia was about a month old when Leslie reached out, so we planned quickly and made sure to get them on the calendar while she was still little. Magnolia was very calm throughout the session, and because she was a little more alert at a month old, we also got some beautiful photographs of her with her eyes wide open.

Planning the Photographs that Matter Most

Before the session, at her planning consultation, Leslie and I talked through styling outfits, locations within her home, and some of the family groupings that were most important to her.

She wanted photographs of all three kids together as well as each of her boys with Magnolia individually.

After two boys, she was very ready to lean into pink, bows, and all the girly vibes.

Leslie chose a dusty pink cotton dress that was comfortable, flattering, and fit beautifully with the aesthetic of her home. While this particular dress isn’t in my client closet, I do have several dresses of the same model in different colors and sizes.

The boys stayed simple and neutral, and Magnolia wore the sweetest floral monogrammed bloomers with a little hair bow.

At the end of the session, we also used an oversized monogrammed bow that matched the bloomers and photographed Magnolia in my new Moses basket, which is now available for all of my newborn families to use.

A Simple In-Home Setup

We started the in-home newborn session in the master bedroom before moving into the living room, where one beautiful window gave us all the light we needed.

You do not need a perfect nursery or a house filled to the brim with natural light for a beautiful in-home newborn session. One good window can be enough to create beautiful photographs that still feel like home.

Big Brothers and Real Moments

Sullivan was almost two during the session, and Grandma was there to help with him whenever he needed a break. She chose to stay behind the scenes, but having another familiar adult nearby was incredibly helpful.

Calloway, their older son, absolutely stole the show. He was so careful with Magnolia and had the proudest smile whenever he held her. She settled right into him, and it was obvious how smitten he was with his new little sister.

There is also one photograph of Dad with all three kids that I adore. It is simple, close, and full of connection. Those are often the moments that end up mattering most later.

About halfway through the session, we stopped for a nursing break. Babies (especially nursing ones) need to eat often in those early days. That’s why I always schedule some extra time into my newborn sessions.

From Digital Files to a Keepsake Photo Box

At her design consultation, Leslie chose to purchase a collection of digital images from this beautiful session.

I loved this gallery so much that I ordered a few sample prints from it for a new offering in my studio: a keepsake glass photo box filled with printed photographs.

I love giving families options for preserving their images beyond a screen. A photo box is simple, tangible, and easy to revisit over the years.

This session was the perfect one to print.
